Your 7-Day Fall Adventure

Massanutten scenic fall lodging buildings and mountain fall 10

Vibrant fall color, cozy evenings by the fire, and your family right in the action: this week stretches from the trails and treetops of Massanutten into Shenandoah National Park and onto the Shenandoah River, with new challenges waiting throughout the Valley. It balances full days outside with slower evenings back on the mountain, when relaxing by the fire feels especially good after a day of exploring. By the end of it, everyone is likely to have a different favorite adventure and a story they’ll still be telling on the ride home. Use this itinerary as is to plan your getaway, or use it as inspiration to build your own family fall adventure.

Your 7 Day Adventure!

Day 1

Arrival + on-site adventure: Family Adventure Park + Mountain Mayhem Mountain Coaster

Welcome to Massanutten! Once you’ve checked in and settled into your accommodations, start the week at the Family Adventure Park. Let the kids test themselves on the ropes course, climb the rock wall, or sift for treasures while gem mining, with plenty of opportunities for grown-ups to join the fun too. Before dinner, hop on the nearby Mountain Mayhem Mountain Coaster, an alpine-style coaster that lets you control your own speed as you twist and turn down the mountain surrounded by fall color.

Afterward, warm up at Campfire Grill with wood-fired pizza, burgers, steaks, and other hearty favorites. Grab a seat outside by the fire on the deck if the weather is crisp, and save room for a skillet of s’mores to share.

Day 2

Full on-site day: Mountain biking + Escape Room

Start the morning at the Massanutten Bike Park. Younger or newer riders can build confidence on beginner-friendly terrain or join a group lesson, while more experienced riders can explore lift-served downhill trails and bigger challenges across the mountain.

Grab lunch on-site, then put your family’s teamwork to the test with an Escape Room challenge. Work together to solve puzzles, uncover clues, and race against the clock. Choose between two themed rooms, Singularity or Pharaoh’s Revenge, and see if your group can break free before time runs out.

Finish the day at Base Camp with casual mountain fare, then see what’s happening around the resort in the evening. Weekends often bring live music, along with comedy and other family-friendly seasonal events.

Day 3

Regional excursion #1: Shenandoah National Park + Skyline Drive

Spend the day following Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park, where ridgelines roll across the horizon in shades of red, orange, and gold. Pull over at a few overlooks along the way, then choose a shorter family-friendly hike and get beneath the trees for a closer look at the changing canopy.

Afterward, stop for lunch in nearby Elkton or continue into Harrisonburg for more local dining before making your way back to Massanutten.

Day 4

On-site recovery day: Waterpark + FlowRider + Diamond Jim’s Arcade

Spend the morning warming up inside Massanutten Waterpark, where the family can bounce between slides, pools, and other indoor attractions. Anyone ready for a little more action can add a FlowRider lesson and see who can stay upright longest on the wave.

When everyone gets hungry, stay right inside the Waterpark for a sit-down lunch at Splash’s or something quick from the Snack Shack, then stop by Sweetz for a treat. After lunch, head to Diamond Jim’s Arcade for classic games and challenges to rack up tickets before heading back to your accommodations.

Tonight, pick up dinner to go or make something in the condo, break out a favorite game, and enjoy a quieter family night together.

Day 5

Regional excursion #2: Canoeing or kayaking on the Shenandoah River

Spend the day exploring the Shenandoah Valley from the water with Massanutten Adventures. Paddle a scenic seven-mile stretch of the Shenandoah River and be sure to keep an eye out for bald eagles, blue herons, ducks, and other wildlife along the way. The trip works for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, with transportation from Massanutten, equipment, and a river orientation included.

Afterward, grab a bite in nearby Elkton before returning to the mountain.

Day 6

Flexible on-site day: Scenic Chairlift + hiking

Start your final full day with a scenic chairlift ride above the mountain, where bands of red, orange, and gold spread across the slopes and Shenandoah Valley below. Once you’re back on the ground, lace up your hiking shoes and explore Massanutten on foot. Choose from wooded paths and more rugged ridge trails, and spend the afternoon beneath the changing canopy with fall color surrounding you along the way.

For dinner, return to a favorite from the week. Settle in at Base Camp for casual mountain fare and relaxed mountain views, or head back to Campfire Grill for wood-fired favorites, a seat outside by the fire on the deck, and maybe one more skillet of s’mores for the table.

Day 7

Easy morning + checkout: Short on-site nature walk

Take one last walk along one of Massanutten’s shorter nature trails and enjoy the fall scenery before checking out. If your route takes you through Elkton or Harrisonburg, stop for lunch along the way and enjoy a little more of the Valley before the drive home.
