Your 7-Day Fall Adventure

Massanutten scenic fall autumn mountain resort aerial 01

A fall week in the Shenandoah Valley gives families a chance to enjoy the season at an easy pace, with colorful mountain views, hands-on activities, and a few favorite stops beyond the resort. There’s room for the kids to stay engaged while still giving everyone time to enjoy the scenery, try something new, and settle into the rhythm of the week together. Use this itinerary as is to plan your getaway, or use it as inspiration to create your own family fall week.

Your 7 Day Adventure!

Day 1

Arrival + easy on-site activity: Horseback riding + pony rides + petting zoo

Welcome to Massanutten! Once you’ve checked in and settled into your accommodations, ease into the week with an afternoon at the stables. Take a guided horseback ride through the fall mountain scenery, let younger kids enjoy a pony ride, and stop by the petting zoo to meet some four-legged friends before dinner.

Settle in at Campfire Grill for wood-fired favorites and, if the weather is nice, a seat outside by the fire on the deck.

Day 2

Full on-site day: Scenic Chairlift + Massanutten Village Family Entertainment Center

Start the morning with a scenic chairlift ride and watch the changing leaves stretch across the mountain and Shenandoah Valley from above.

After lunch on-site, spend the afternoon at the Massanutten Village Family Entertainment Center. Challenge the family to a round of mini golf, race around the go-kart track, take a spin in the bumper cars, and enjoy some classic family fun together.

For dinner, settle in at Base Camp for burgers, sandwiches, and other casual mountain fare, with views of the surrounding mountain as you wind down from the day.

Day 3

Regional excursion #1: Luray Caverns

Take a day trip to Luray Caverns, where the whole family can explore a massive underground cave system filled with towering formations, mirrored pools, Dream Lake, the Cathedral, and the Great Stalacpipe Organ. The year-round 54-degree temperature makes the caverns a fun contrast to a crisp fall day outside.

Grab lunch in Luray afterward or stop in nearby Elkton on your way back toward Massanutten, then enjoy an easy dinner on-site in the evening.

Day 4

On-site recovery day: Waterpark + Diamond Jim’s Arcade + Massanutten Select class

Spend the morning at Massanutten Waterpark and splash through the slides, pools, and indoor attractions. When everyone gets hungry, stay inside for a sit-down lunch at Splash’s or something quick from the Snack Shack, with a stop at Sweetz for a treat.

After lunch, spend some time at Diamond Jim’s Arcade and turn up the friendly competition with classic arcade games, challenges, and a few chances to see who can claim the family high score.

Later, slow things down with a Massanutten Select class. Choose something the family can create together, like canvas painting, suncatcher making, candle making, or another hands-on activity from the schedule.

Tonight, pick up something to cook in the condo and make it a family game or movie night.

Day 5

Regional excursion #2: Explore More Discovery Museum + downtown Harrisonburg

Spend the day in downtown Harrisonburg with a visit to Explore More Discovery Museum, where kids can climb, build, experiment, and explore through hands-on exhibits. Afterward, grab lunch downtown, wander a few nearby shops, or stop for something sweet before making your way back to the mountain.

Day 6

Flexible on-site day: Fishing at Painter’s Pond + Build-A-Bear at The Market

Keep your last full day easy with a morning by the water at Painter’s Pond, where the family can cast a few lines together surrounded by the fall mountain scenery. Later, stop by The Market and let the kids create their own stuffed friend at Build-A-Bear, choosing their new companion and helping bring it to life as a keepsake from the week.

For dinner, revisit a favorite on-site spot from earlier in the trip, whether that’s Base Camp for casual mountain fare and relaxed views or Campfire Grill for wood-fired favorites and a seat outside by the fire.

Day 7

Easy morning + checkout: Fitness & Rec Club

Spend your final morning at the Fitness & Rec Club. Take a dip in the indoor pool, shoot some hoops, play a few arcade games, or choose another easy indoor activity before checking out. If your route takes you through Elkton or Harrisonburg, stop for lunch along the way before starting the drive home.
