Spring brings warmer days, greener trails, and more ways for families to enjoy the mountain together. This week mixes family favorites at the resort with a little exploring around the Shenandoah Valley, from an afternoon at Painter’s Pond and a hands-on Massanutten Select class to a day exploring Luray Caverns. Use this itinerary as is, or use it as inspiration to create a spring week that feels perfect for your family.
Arrival + easy on-site activity: Horseback riding + pony rides + petting zoo
Welcome to Massanutten! Once you’ve checked in and settled into your accommodations, ease into the week with an afternoon at the stables. Take a guided horseback ride through the spring mountain scenery, let younger kids enjoy a pony ride, and stop by the petting zoo to meet some four-legged friends before settling in for dinner at Campfire Grill.

Full on-site day: Family Adventure Park + Mountain Mayhem Mountain Coaster
Spend the morning exploring the Family Adventure Park, where younger adventurers can take on the kids’ ropes course, climb the rock wall, or sift for treasures while gem mining. Add a ride on the Mountain Mayhem Mountain Coaster for a little extra excitement, then grab lunch on-site before enjoying a slower afternoon back at your accommodations or one of the resort’s play areas.
For the evening, check the resort event calendar for live music, comedy, or another family-friendly event happening during your stay.
Regional excursion #1: Luray Caverns
Take a day trip off the mountain to Luray Caverns, where the whole family can explore a massive underground cave system filled with towering formations, mirrored pools, Dream Lake, the Cathedral, and the Great Stalacpipe Organ. The cool underground setting makes it a fun change of pace from a spring day outside. Afterward, grab lunch in Luray or stop in Elkton on your way back toward Massanutten, then settle in for an easy dinner on-site in the evening.
On-site recovery day: Waterpark & Diamond Jim’s Arcade + Massanutten Select class
Spend the morning at Massanutten Waterpark, splashing through the slides, pools, and family-friendly attractions. When everyone gets hungry, stay inside for a sit-down lunch at Splash’s or grab something quick from the Snack Shack, with a stop at Sweetz if a treat is in order. Before leaving the Waterpark, swing through Diamond Jim’s Arcade for some family-friendly competition and exciting games.
In the afternoon, slow things down with a Massanutten Select class. Choose something the family can make together, like canvas painting, suncatcher making, candle making, or another hands-on experience from the schedule.
Tonight, keep things cozy with dinner in the condo and a family game or movie night.
Regional excursion #2: Explore More Discovery Museum + downtown Harrisonburg
Spend the day in downtown Harrisonburg with a visit to Explore More Discovery Museum, where kids can climb, build, experiment, and explore through hands-on exhibits. Afterward, grab lunch downtown, wander a few of the nearby shops, or stop for a sweet treat before making your way back to the mountain.
Flexible on-site day: Fishing at Painter’s Pond + Build-A-Bear at The Market
Keep your last full day easy with a morning by the water at Painter’s Pond, where the family can cast a few lines together and enjoy the spring scenery. Later, stop by The Market and let the kids create their own stuffed friend at Build-A-Bear, choosing their new companion and helping bring it to life as one last keepsake from their week at Massanutten.
For dinner, revisit one of your favorite on-site spots from earlier in the week, whether that’s Base Camp for casual mountain fare and relaxed mountain views, or Campfire Grill for wood-fired favorites and a seat outside by the fire on the deck.
Easy morning + checkout: FItness & Rec Club
Spend your final morning at the Fitness & Rec Club. Take a dip in the indoor pool, shoot some hoops, play a few arcade games, or choose another easy indoor activity before checking out. If your route takes you through Harrisonburg, stop for lunch at a local favorite like Magpie Diner or Bella Luna Wood-Fired Pizza and stretch the getaway just a little longer before the drive home.
