A summer weekend on the mountain can be equal parts challenge and escape. This three-day itinerary keeps the days active with hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, then shifts to good food and drinks in downtown Harrisonburg when the sun goes down. It’s the kind of getaway that leaves you a little tired, a little exhilarated, and very glad you came. Use this itinerary as is to plan your getaway, or use it as inspiration to build your own summer adventure.
Afternoon arrival: Hiking
Welcome to Massanutten! Once you’ve checked in and settled into your accommodations, lace up your hiking shoes and explore the mountain on foot. Choose from rocky ridge trails with sweeping views, wooded multi-use paths along the Western Slope, or an easier paved option like Storybook Trail for a gentler first afternoon outside. With everything from rugged backcountry loops to family-friendly paths, it’s an easy way to get your first look at Massanutten’s summer landscape.
Dinner: Campfire Grill
After your hike, settle in at Campfire Grill for wood-fired pizza, steaks, burgers, and other hearty favorites. Pair dinner with a signature cocktail or local craft beer, or grab a seat outside by the fire on the deck to enjoy the summer evening.

Morning headline activity: Mountain biking
Start the morning at the Massanutten Bike Park and trade the pavement for a day on the mountain. Ride lift-served downhill trails through the summer woods, with everything from more approachable terrain for newer riders to steeper, more technical runs for those ready for a bigger challenge. If you’re new to mountain biking, group lessons are available to help you get comfortable before setting out.
Grab lunch on-site, then keep the adventure going at the Family Adventure Park.
Afternoon: Horseback Riding
Grab lunch on-site, then head to Woodstone Meadows Stable for a one-hour guided trail ride around the base of Massanutten Mountain. Enjoy a change of pace after a morning on the bike trails as you enjoy the summer mountain scenery from horseback. The horses are gentle and trail-wise, so the ride is approachable even for beginners. Reservations are required, so be sure to book ahead.
Evening: Downtown Harrisonburg
After a full day outside, make the evening about good food and drinks in downtown Harrisonburg. Stop for cider at Sage Bird Ciderworks or a craft beer at Pale Fire Brewing Co., then grab dinner at a local favorite like Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint or Bella Luna Wood-Fired Pizza before returning to the mountain.
Morning before checkout: Mountain Mayhem Mountain Coaster
End the weekend with one last thrill on the Mountain Mayhem Mountain Coaster. Climb into your cart, choose your own speed, and race through twists and turns down the mountain with the summer scenery rushing past. Squeeze in a ride or two before checking out and starting the drive home.
