Summer in the Shenandoah Valley has a slower side too. This week moves between the mountain and the Valley, with long views from the scenic chairlift, an easy float on the Shenandoah River, and afternoons that might end over a glass of local wine or a few casts at Painter’s Pond. Use this itinerary as is to plan your getaway, or use it as inspiration to create a summer week that feels like your own.
Arrival + easy on-site activity: Scenic Chairlift
Welcome to Massanutten! Once you’ve checked in and settled into your accommodations, ease into the week with a scenic chairlift ride above the mountain. Glide over the green summer treeline, look out across the Shenandoah Valley, and enjoy a fun first afternoon together before dinner.
Afterward, settle in at Campfire Grill for wood-fired pizza, steaks, burgers, and other comforting favorites. If the weather is nice, grab a seat outside by the fire on the deck and enjoy a summer evening on the mountain.

Full on-site day: The Spa at Massanutten + Horseback Riding
Start the morning at The Spa at Massanutten with a massage, facial, body treatment, or a couples massage. Spend a little time unwinding in the quiet spa setting, then grab lunch on-site before heading outside.
Spend the afternoon on a guided horseback ride through Massanutten’s wooded trails and open mountain scenery. Ride beneath the summer canopy and enjoy the mountain views from the saddle.
Finish the evening at Elevations Cocktail Lounge with a signature cocktail, then see what’s happening around the resort. Summer Jamboree brings free events and activities across Massanutten throughout the season, from live music and outdoor movies to karaoke, pickleball, comedy, and more.
Regional excursion #1: Shenandoah National Park + Skyline Drive
Spend the day exploring Shenandoah National Park along Skyline Drive. Stop at overlooks for gorgeous green summer views across the Blue Ridge, then choose a shorter hike and spend some time beneath the park’s summer trees.
Afterward, stop for lunch in nearby Elkton or continue into Harrisonburg. Stay in Harrisonburg for dinner and make an evening of it, or return to Massanutten and enjoy dinner on-site back at the resort.
On-site recovery day: River tubing on the Shenandoah River
Cool off with a laid-back float down the Shenandoah River with Massanutten Adventures. Settle into your own tube, let the current carry you a little over a mile toward the Elkton boat landing, and spend the trip drifting past wooded shoreline and summer Valley scenery. Transportation from Massanutten, tubes, life jackets, and a safety orientation are all included, so all you have to do is show up ready for a fun day on the water.
Grab lunch in Elkton afterward, then return to the resort for a slower afternoon. Tonight, pick up something to cook in your condo and enjoy dinner with the summer mountain scenery outside before settling in for a game or movie night.
Regional excursion #2: Local wineries, cideries & breweries
Spend the day exploring the Shenandoah Valley’s craft beverage scene. Start at CrossKeys Vineyards with a tasting and Blue Ridge views, then continue into downtown Harrisonburg for cider at Sage Bird Ciderworks or a craft beer at Pale Fire Brewing Co. Stay downtown for dinner and make an evening of it before heading back to the mountain.
Flexible on-site day: Golf + fishing at Painter’s Pond
Spend the morning on the greens and choose between Massanutten’s two 18-hole championship golf courses, Mountain Greens or Woodstone Meadows. Tee off surrounded by summer mountain scenery, then stop by Bogey’s Snack Bar for a casual bite after your round.
Later, trade the fairways for a quieter stretch by Painter’s Pond and cast a few lines together before dinner. For your final evening, revisit a favorite on-site restaurant from the week, whether that’s Base Camp for casual mountain fare or Campfire Grill for wood-fired favorites and a seat outside by the fire.
Easy morning + checkout: Short on-site nature walk
Take one last walk along one of Massanutten’s shorter nature trails and enjoy the summer mountain scenery before checking out. If your route takes you through Harrisonburg, stop for brunch or lunch at Magpie Diner or Bella Luna Wood-Fired Pizza before beginning the drive home.
